As summer draws to a close and we move into autumn, you may notice that your skin starts to feel a little different.

Perhaps it feels drier or tighter after cleansing, your complexion looks less radiant, or suddenly your usual skincare routine doesn’t seem to be working quite as well. You may also notice that fine lines appear more pronounced, your skin feels more sensitive, or areas of pigmentation left behind by the summer sun become more noticeable.

These changes are very common. As the temperature and humidity begin to fall, our skin has to adapt to a different environment — and autumn is an excellent time to reassess your skincare routine and give your skin some extra support.

Why does your skin change in autumn?

One of the biggest changes is the drop in humidity.

Cooler air generally holds less moisture, while indoor heating can further reduce humidity. This can increase moisture loss from the skin, leaving it feeling dry, tight or uncomfortable. The skin’s protective barrier can also become more easily irritated.

Dermatologists recommend paying particular attention to moisturisation as the weather becomes colder, with creams and ointments generally being more effective at retaining moisture than lighter lotions

You may therefore notice:

  • Increased dryness or tightness
  • Rougher skin texture
  • Flaking or sensitivity
  • More visible fine lines
  • Dullness and loss of radiance
  • Chapped lips and drier hands
  • Increased sensitivity to active skincare ingredients

For some people, particularly those with sensitive skin or conditions such as eczema, seasonal changes can also contribute to irritation or flare-ups.

Your skin may also be showing the effects of summer

Autumn isn’t just about protecting your skin from the colder weather. It’s also the perfect time to address what summer may have left behind.

Months of increased UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation, uneven skin tone, dehydration, rough texture and the visible signs of photoaging.

Even if you have been diligent with your SPF, your skin may still benefit from a little post-summer TLC.

This is why we often think of early autumn as a “reset” season for your skin.

The first step: support your skin barrier

When the weather changes, your skincare routine doesn’t necessarily need to become complicated. In fact, the opposite can be helpful.

A gentle cleanser, a good moisturiser and daily SPF form the foundations of healthy skin.

Look for moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, which can help support hydration and the skin barrier.

It is also worth being mindful of over-exfoliating. If your skin is becoming dry or sensitive, reducing the frequency of strong acids or retinoids may be appropriate until your skin barrier feels comfortable again. This is particularly important if you are already experiencing redness, irritation or flaking.

And although the weather may be cooler, SPF is still essential. UV exposure doesn’t stop when summer ends, and dermatologists recommend continuing to use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher throughout the year.

Which Wessex Skin treatments are worth considering in autumn?

Autumn can be a particularly useful time to consider professional skin treatments, particularly if your skin is looking dull, uneven or tired after summer.

At Wessex Skin Clinic, we take an individual approach to treatment, so the most appropriate option will always depend on your skin, concerns and goals.

DiamondGlow Facial — for hydration, radiance and a skin refresh

If your skin is feeling dull, congested or dehydrated, a DiamondGlow Facial can be an excellent way to give your complexion a fresh start.

The treatment combines exfoliation, extraction and infusion of condition-specific serums. It can improve the appearance of hydration, texture and tone, with no associated downtime.

This makes it particularly appealing if you want your skin to look brighter and healthier without committing to a more intensive treatment.

LED Therapy — gentle support for your skin

LED phototherapy is another option worth considering as we head into the colder months.

At Wessex Skin, we use Dermalux® Tri-Wave LED therapy, which uses different wavelengths of light to support skin rejuvenation and repair.

LED can be incorporated into a wider skin treatment programme or used as a treatment in its own right, depending on your individual needs.

Chemical Peels — tackling dullness, pigmentation and texture

If your main concern is uneven pigmentation, congestion, dullness or rough texture, autumn can be a good time to consider a professionally prescribed chemical peel.

At Wessex Skin, we offer tailored professional peels using Dermapure and SkinCeuticals systems. Chemical peels work by controlled exfoliation of the skin and can be used to address concerns including uneven texture, pigmentation, acne and signs of ageing.

The important word here is tailored. Your skin shouldn’t automatically receive the strongest peel available. The right treatment and strength should be selected according to your skin type, condition and goals.

Microneedling — supporting collagen and skin renewal

If you’re looking beyond hydration and want to address skin texture, fine lines, pigmentation or acne scarring, microneedling may be an option.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries within the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing response and encouraging collagen production. Wessex Skin offers SkinPen microneedling as part of its skin rejuvenation treatments.

Autumn can be a particularly convenient season for planning a course of treatments as part of a longer-term skin rejuvenation programme.

Profhilo® — for hydration and skin quality

For skin that feels dehydrated, lacks firmness or has lost some of its youthful elasticity, Profhilo® is another treatment available at Wessex Skin.

Profhilo® is a high-concentration hyaluronic acid treatment designed to improve skin hydration, firmness and elasticity. It can be used on areas including the face, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands.

Rather than thinking about autumn skin purely in terms of treating dryness, this type of treatment can form part of a broader approach to improving overall skin quality.

What about your skincare products?

As the seasons change, it can be tempting to completely replace your bathroom cabinet. But you probably don’t need to.

Instead, think about adapting your routine.

Wessex Skin offers medical-grade skincare from brands including SkinCeuticals, Obagi, Dermaquest and AllSkinMed, allowing skincare to be tailored to individual concerns such as ageing, pigmentation, acne, sensitivity and sun damage.

For autumn, your routine may benefit from focusing on:

Hydration: Choose products that help replenish and retain moisture. SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier and Triple Lipid Restore are great options.

Barrier support: Ceramides, glycerin and other moisturising ingredients can be helpful when skin becomes drier. All Skin Med Barrier Defence Emulsion and Barrier Recovery Cream work to restore the integrity of the skin barrier and counteract the drying effects of air conditioning or heating.

Antioxidants: Vitamin C and other antioxidants can complement your daily SPF and help support skin exposed to environmental stressors. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a powerful antioxidant serum that can be used as maximum anti-ageing skincare. It protects this skin from free radical damage and oxidative stress.

Retinoids: These can be valuable for concerns including fine lines, uneven pigmentation and texture, but they can also cause dryness and irritation. They should therefore be introduced carefully and may not be appropriate when the skin barrier is already compromised. All Skin Med and Obagi both offer retinols in a range of strengths, if you are new to retinoids it is strongly recommended that you start on the mildest formulation and slowly build up to avoid irritation.

SPF: Don’t put your sunscreen away just because summer is over. Daily broad-spectrum SPF remains one of the most important parts of an effective skincare routine.

Autumn is a good time to think beyond a single treatment

One of the most important things to remember is that great skin doesn’t usually come from one facial or one product.

At Wessex Skin, we believe that professional treatments and good home skincare should work together.

A treatment can stimulate change within the skin, while your daily skincare routine helps maintain and support those results. As we have discussed previously, skincare really is part of the ongoing process rather than something separate from your treatment plan.

The autumn months provide an opportunity to step back, look at your skin as a whole and consider what it actually needs — rather than simply adding another product to your routine.

Your autumn skin checklist

As we move into the new season, consider:

  • Cleanse gently and avoid excessively hot water.
  • Increase moisturisation if your skin is feeling dry or tight.
  • Don’t over-exfoliate, particularly if your skin is becoming sensitive.
  • Continue using SPF every day, even when the weather is cooler.
  • Consider antioxidants such as vitamin C as part of your morning routine.
  • Introduce or adjust active ingredients gradually, particularly retinoids.
  • Consider a professional skin treatment if your skin is looking dull, dehydrated or uneven.
  • Book a skin consultation if you’re unsure what your skin actually needs.

Give your skin a seasonal reset

Autumn is a beautiful time of year — and it’s also a great time to give your skin some attention after the long, bright days of summer.

Whether your priority is hydration, pigmentation, texture, ageing, acne or simply restoring a healthy glow, there are a variety of treatments and skincare options available.

At Wessex Skin Clinic, our approach is always individual. Rather than following seasonal skincare trends, we look at your skin and recommend treatments and products based on your specific needs.

If you’re unsure where to start, a consultation is a great place to begin.
