Summary
• Fine blood vessels on the face, neck or chest and rosacea can be treated with laser or intense pulsed light treatment.
• After treatment, most of the blood vessels will clear, rosacea will stablise, the skin will be less sallow and fine lines will be reduced.
• Laser or intense pulsed light treatment can also be used to treat freckles or flat brown marks or acne
• At the Wessex Skin Clinic, you will be treated by Dr Fairris, who is one of the UK's top Consultant Dermatologists, and has more than 20 years experience of treating the skin with lasers.

What skin conditions can be treated?
• Red and blue blood vessels up to 2 mm in diameter on the face, nose, neck or chest.
- Any flat brown marks (freckles) in the treatment area and fine lines or wrinkles will also improve.
• Rosacea
- In addition to clearing the veins, the other symptoms of rosacea will also improve i.e. the flushing, blushing, red spots, sore skin and intolerance of cosmetics.
• Flat brown marks of the back of the hands
- concomitant treatment with Obagi Nu-Derm
• Flushing and blushing
• Dull, sallow skin
- concomitant treatment with Obagi Nu-Derm
• Poikiloderma of Civatte
- "perfume stains" on the sides of the neck + Obagi Nu-Derm
• Fine lines and wrinkles
- + treatment with Obagi Nu-Derm
N.B.
• I find that fine veins on the legs are better treated with sclerotherapy
How does the treatment work?
Lasers and intense pulsed light devices are designed to generate pulses of light (wavelength 480-980nm) that pass through the outer layer of the skin and are absorbed by the red in the underlying blood vessels.
Because these wavelengths of light are also absorbed by brown, any brown structures in the skin, such as flat brown marks, freckles or a suntan, also absorb the light.
Each pulse of light needs to be emitted for just long enough to heat up the unwanted blood vessels without the heat spilling out and damaging the surrounding skin.
Is treatment safe?
Yes. Intense pulsed light devices and lasers are safe if you are treated with a medical grade machine by an experienced and suitably qualified doctor.
Which areas of fine veins respond best?
• Veins on the face, the neck and the chest clear by 70% or more after three treatments
• The veins on the sides of the nose often need four to five treatments because people usually wish to clear them completely.
Which treatment devices work best?
I believe that the skill and experience of the doctor carrying out the treatment is as important as the device. This skin needs to be treated confidently and aggressively to get good results without being over heated.
This can only be achieved with the powerful, expensive, medical-grade machines that have a cooled treatment head to protect the skin. The cheap intense pulsed light devices used in most non-medical clinics have neither the power to achieve good results nor the cooling device to protect the skin.
Does the treatment hurt?
Each pulse feels like a flick from a rubber band.
At the Wessex Skin Clinic, we do all we can to make the experience as pleasant as possible by numbing the skin with local anaesthetic cream before treatment and cooling it with a jet of ice-cold air during treatment.
How should I prepare for treatment?
I believe that clear compact, skin is the key to getting the best results with all laser treatments.
All traces of suntan must be removed by wearing a sunscreen and the skin's maturation normalised using a retinoid containing cream.
What is it like to be treated?
At the Wessex Skin Clinic the treatment will be carried out at a pace that both suits you and allows for a thorough treatment.
Protective goggles are placed over the eyes and a gel is applied to the treatment area. Treatment begins with the machine on a low setting and the power is increased as you become confident that you can tolerate the treatment.
How will I look immediately after treatment?
The skin may be red and slightly swollen immediately after treatment. Make-up can be applied immediately after treatment. The reaction settles within a few hours.
Is there any important aftercare?
If you are treated at the Wessex Skin Clinic, you will be given an information sheet detailing the instructions that you should follow and an emergency contact number to call in the unlikely event that you encounter any problems after the treatment.
How soon after treatment will I notice an improvement?
Within a week of the first treatment.

How many treatments will I need?
If treated by an experienced operator using a medical-quality machine, most people will obtain a 70% or better clearance in the fine blood vessels and brown marks after three treatments.
Some peoples' veins vanish for good.
However, if you have a tendency to rosacea or follow an out-door life-style, you may need top-up treatments every six to twelve months for the first two to three years.
Are there any side-effect?
Anticipated
• Redness - usually settles within a few hours.
• Swelling - usually mild and lasting a few hours.
• Brown marks - flake off in 5-7 days.
Unanticipated
• Small blisters - heal without leaving marks, if treated correctly.
• Scarring - rare when treatment is carried out with medical-grade machines.
Who shouldn't be treated?
• Seek treatment from a highly experienced Dermatologist if your skin forms keloid scars.
• Anyone who has melasma
