Chondrodermatitis

Summary

What Causes Chondrodermatitis?

Chondrodermatitis is caused by a reduction of blood flow to the cartilage of the ear. Usually, this is caused by pressure from a pillow in people who always sleep on one side but occasionally tight fitting headwear and cold temperatures are responsible.

What Is Chondrodermatitis?

Chondrodermatitis is an area of cartilage the has become inflamed. Whenever cartilage becomes inflamed for whatever reason, it hurts. It most commonly occurs on the outer rim of the ear but can also occur on the fold just inside the rim.

What Will Happen To Chondrodermatitis?

In most people it persists but some people find that they can cure the problem by varying the side they sleep on.

Treatment

If the inflamed area of cartilage is removed surgically under local anaesthetic, the pain will usually go and not recur. Within two weeks the ear is usually sufficiently comfortable to sleep on again.
