What is a dermatofibroma?
A Dermatofibroma is a persistent hard nodule in the skin. It is a scar-like reaction that develops under the skin.
Usually they are painful when knocked, but some itch. They often arise in crops of two or three. It is unusual to develop more than five or six of them.
What causes a dermatofibroma?
It is thought that they are caused by an abnormal reaction to an insect bite. Most occur at sites on the body that are bitten by insects.
What happens if a dermatofibroma is not treated?
It is rare for a dermatofibroma to disappear by itself. Occasionally, they will grow to be 3-4 cm in diameter but usually they remain less than 5mm in diameter. Sometimes they disappear to leave a dip in the skin.
How can a dermatofibroma be treated?
Surgery is the only treatment that reliably removes dermatofibromas.
If not removed completely, it will grow back.
